They loaded up the boat with food and drinks and fishing rods and set off. Their mother listened and laughed as the 7 and 4 year old told wild tales of feeling sharks and whales tugging on their lines. Their father just kept easing them back from the edges of the vessel.
About two hours into the spring afternoon, Declan, his brother started leaping about, shouting and pointing to the water a few hundred yards off. "Papa! Papa! Mum! I saws a mermaid!" His father stared off in the distance and then was in a panic, shouting for them to get down and stay quite.
His father went to trying to get the boat moving back towards shore, but the wind was not favoring them. His mother had tears streaming down her face as she pleaded to Poseidon for a safe return to shore. That's when they heard the song. Col peered over the edge. The song was low and throaty, a harmony of voices soon joined in, and every note was soothing, but echoed with pain and anger. That's when the others boarded from behind.
The last thing he saw was a nude woman with red tinged eyes and a dagger held in her teeth scream in his direction. He had no idea how long it had been when his eyes slowly opened. He scrambled into a corner and hugged his arms around his knees. The tears came freely. His father was covered head to toe in needle prick semi-circles. His mother had only one bite, but it seemed she hadn't survived it. He only found half of his brother.
He had a wound on his calf, the same needle prick bites, but the blood was dry and congealed. He felt angry, revenge making him see red in the aftermath of the attack. He heard the singing again and two woman peered over into the boat at him. He cowered as they spoke in a different tongue. "What your name boy?" He shivered under her tone, "C-cole." They giggled in cruel harmony, "New name Colmillos, you live. You be fun, like Cristiano." And they left him.
Little did he know, they would fill his life with torment. He tried to get the boat to move towards shore, but it was useless. Days passed and food ran low and then, the moon came.
